HOT NEWS
December 2005
Make-up news from the computer of John Woodbridge
Stop worrying about what you're going to buy Aunty Gladys for Christmas (just
get her an exfoliating face scrub - the same as last year).
Put down your seasonal shopping list for ten minutes.
Pick up a glass of mulled wine.
Pull up a comfy chair.
Relax...
Now, doesn't that feel better?
Who said the Holiday Season had to be stressful?
If you're stuck for gift ideas this year, you'll find a seasonal
sprinkling of suggestions within the pages of this festive newsletter.
Should you really wish to impress your make-up artist friends, you
could, of course, gift them a free subscription to HOT
NEWS.
Sign up takes just 30 seconds at www.johnwoodbridge.com
Although I can't promise to deliver it in my reindeer drawn sleigh
- they'll find the latest make-up news, views and
information beautifully gift-wrapped, in their inbox each and every month
throughout 2006.
Why not send them a seasonal email right now, directing them to www.johnwoodbridge.com and suggesting
they subscribe?
"It's OK, Rudolph. I'll colour-correct that little bit of warmth on your
nose, so you'll look just fine for your close-up..."

PROSTHETIC TRAINING:
ARE YOU ONE OF THE FOUR MAKE-UP ARTISTS I'M
LOOKING FOR?
Wow!
Last month’s article about our New Year Ultra-Real Prosthetics
Masterclass created a flurry of pre-registrations and I’m delighted to say
that we now have only four places available on this
unique "hands on" prosthetic lab programme.
The "smart cookies" have already booked their place on this exclusive
never to be repeated masterclass.
If you need to join them - you'll have to move fast.
The booking fee is £395 (incl. VAT) which also includes a huge delegate info
pack containing loads of essential stuff that I haven't got space to list here.
Of course, you'll also get to keep all the prosthetics you'll make on the
programme along with the comprehensive course notes. You'll even get video
education material to further your knowledge of even more prosthetic techniques
when you attend this incredible masterclass programme.
You can get full details of our Ultra-Real Prosthetics
Masterclass mailed directly to your inbox by sending a blank email
to
prosthetics@woodbridgeproductions.co.uk
A number of people have contacted me asking why I'm not planning to ever
repeat this masterclass again.
At the risk of sounding like Eb Scrooge, I simply don't want a lot of
people to have the cutting-edge skills and knowledge I'm sharing with you on
this programme.
This will give those who do decide to invest in their career a very
powerful advantage when seeking prosthetic lab work in the industry.
Is this unfair?
Bah! Humbug!
Ask the people who quickly jumped on board to book themselves on this
programme.
Should you work with (or want to work with) prosthetics, frankly, you’d be
insane to miss this in depth, hands-on prosthetic masterclass programme.
It will show you how to cast appliances from materials including foam
gelatine and the most incredible, easy-to-use, translucent prosthetic
silicone I've ever seen.
Quite simply, by the end of the Masterclass you will know how to make
flesh-like prosthetics that will rival those produced by any
professional lab. And you'll know how to do this with minimal kit or equipment -
meaning you can make top quality prosthetic appliances in the make-up room, on
location, at home... anywhere you happen to be.
If you are already working with prosthetics, the programme will bring your
skills bang up to date, giving you in depth, practical skills and knowledge
of how to work with some remarkable new and highly exciting prosthetic
materials.
If you are just starting out, this is one hell of a programme to jump-start
your prosthetic make-up career.
Of course, if you disagree or think we've under-delivered on our promises to
you, our unique 100% Money Back
Satisfaction Guarantee means we'll gladly hand you back your booking fee
cheque.
With so few places left on the programme, I don't want to fill up this
special Holiday edition of our email bulletin with further coverage of the
training - but if you missed the information featured in the last
issue and want to take a look at full details of our Ultra-Real
Prosthetics Masterclass, being held at Twickenham Film Studios,
London on Sunday, 22nd January 2006, send a blank email to
prosthetics@woodbridgeproductions.co.uk
What could you achieve with these cutting edge prosthetic skills
in 2006?

DEAR SANTA … WHAT TO GET THE MAKE-UP ARTIST WHO HAS EVERYTHING # 1
:
NEW MAKE-UP RANGE FROM JEMMA KIDD
My friend and fellow make-up artist, Jemma
Kidd has just launched her own full colour make-up line now available in the UK
at both Selfridges and Boots.
The range, called JEMMA KIDD MAKEUP SCHOOL, is
part of Jemma’s vision to more widely share her professional skills, fashion
experience and extensive make-up knowledge.
Featuring multi-purpose tools and stunningly
wearable colours, Jemma’s range will doubtless be a hit with both consumers and
make-up professionals alike.
The products will be complemented with an
array of teaching materials, guides and events.
I saw these exciting new products,
appropriately enough, at The Jemma Kidd Make-Up School, during my regular
teaching session as part of Jemma’s top-notch training programme.
Further details of the make-up
range at: http://www.jemmakidd.com/

NEWS:
NASMAH LAUNCH DOWNLOADABLE RISK ASSESSMENT GUIDELINE
FORMS
The National Association of Screen Make-Up Artists and Hairdressers have
posted a series of Risk Assessment Guideline Forms on their website covering
work in studio and mobile make-up facilities as well as in crowd tents.
The forms are available to download, free of charge, from their website.
Go to www.nasmah.org.uk and click on
the "Risk Assessment Forms" link.
v
HEALTH & SAFETY:
P.A.T. YOUR ELECTRICALS
If you work as a make-up and hair artist in the UK did you know that you are
legally required to have all your portable electrical appliances tested at least
once a year?
Sometimes, in certain circumstances, your electrical equipment may even need
to be tested more frequently.
Many other countries also legally require that you have your electrical
equipment regularly tested by a competent, qualified electrician. If you live
outside the UK, consult with your local or national government health and safety
authority to find out the regulations for the country, state or region where you
live.
In the UK, the Portable Appliance Test (P.A.T.) needs to be conducted by a
suitably qualified electrician.
Some studios will not allow freelances to plug their electrical equipment
into the make-up room power supply unless it carries valid P.A.T. labelling and
certification.
For many make-up and hair artists, finding out who to call to can be a real
headache - particularly if you have a lot of electrical equipment that needs to
be tested, as testing can get expensive.
I use Brian Holdstock of P.A.T. it to test my electrical
equipment.
Brian works in selected regions around south, west and north London and
surrounding counties.
He is not only efficient and courteous, his P.A.T. service is also very
affordable.
You can also take your electrical equipment to him to be tested by prior
arrangement - and get to meet Daisy and Dottie, Brian’s beautiful collie dogs.
If you’re are based in or near to London and need to get your electrical
equipment tested, contact Brian.
His telephone contact details are on his web page at www.patit.co.uk or you can email him at brian@patit.co.uk
Of course, I don’t get a penny from recommending Brian to you.
But Brian is honest, speedy and reliable - and that is deserving of my
highest recommendation.
Make sure you stay within the law - keep your P.A.T. servicing up to
date.

DEAR SANTA … WHAT TO
GET THE MAKE-UP ARTIST WHO HAS EVERYTHING # 2 :
BOOKS… BOOKS… AND MORE BOOKS!
Make-up books!
I love ‘em!
And, if you’re smart, so should
you.
You'll increase your own make-up knowledge,
learn about new or different techniques and materials, be inspired or awe-struck
at some remarkable cosmetic creativity or perhaps learn more about fashions,
techniques and skills from bygone eras.
As make-up artists, we must never stop
learning, never stop being inspired to create and innovate - and books are
a very effective and low cost way to keep "topping up" our make-up
knowledge.
Even with my busy schedule, I still find time
to read at least two books a month and will invariably treat myself to any new
make-up related title that I may find.
Two really great make-up books I've
come across in the last few months, with which to indulge yourself over
the Holiday Season, are detailed at
www.woodbridgeproductions.co.uk/products.htm
I've deliberately chosen titles that you
may not have come across before.
The books are also very different from
each other - but both are absolute gems.
Purchase either or both as a treat for
yourself this Christmas.
Neither will disappoint you.

JUST FOR FUN:
A GREAT "BUNCH" OF MAKE-UP ARTISTS ??
Help!
I’ve no idea what the collective noun for a gathering of make-up artists
could / should be.
"Team" or "crew" are probably correct… but BORING !
Time for a rethink…
A "clutch" of make-up artists? - No.
A "bevy" of make-up artists? - Definitely not!
A "pride" of make-up artists? - Hmm, maybe.
All contributions to tackle this problem gratefully received by john@woodbridgeproductions.co.uk
Prizes awarded for the most enlightening, entertaining or
downright outrageous!
Best submissions featured (anonymously, if required) in next month’s
bulletin.
Get thinking… get emailing!

ONLINE:
WEBSITE OF THE MONTH: www.FilmMakeup.co.uk
Oh the work… oh the pain!
But my new website all about looking great in high definition is now
(finally!) online.
It’s not just a website for make-up and hair artists - but also for
directors, technical and other set craft crew… in fact, anyone whose
business involves making the artistes in their care look good and feel great on
camera.
On screen talent with concerns about HD may also want to peruse the site -
and there’s even a web page exclusively set aside for actors and presenters at
www.FilmMakeup.co.uk
I hope that www.FilmMakeup.co.uk
will help you in your own work with HD.
As a friend and peer in the industry, I would really welcome your feedback on
the new website.
Compliments or criticisms - send it all to john@woodbridgeproductions.co.uk
I’ve checked the new site for technical glitches and can’t see any - but if
you do spot any operational problems, please also let me know.
Enjoy!

LOGGING OFF:
WARMEST WISHES FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Unbelievable - but true.
Just 20 days left until Santa comes knocking.
Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing over the forthcoming Holidays, I wish
you and those dear to you peace, health and happiness for the festive season and
throughout 2006.
This year Julia, my own nearest and dearest, and I will spending
Christmas Day with my mother here in London and then celebrating the New Year
with her folks out in South Africa.
But fear not - I’ll be stopping off at the office to send you an
action-packed January 2006 edition of HOT
NEWS as I head to the airport.
Next issue, as the greatest make-up trade show on earth rolls into town, I’ll
be detailing the "must sees" at IMATS 06.
I’ll also let you know how we can meet up in London at the show - and be
giving you an exclusive insight as to what I’ll be doing at the International
Make-Up Artist Trade Show 2006.
Finally, a quick reminder.
Are you one of only four remaining make-up artists who can join me on my
Ultra-Real Prosthetics Masterclass next January?
